A calming visual ethnography of Amsterdam’s bike streets--and the politics of everday mobility
Formal fietsstraten are only one way Amsterdam has prioritized an “Auto te Gast” ethos since 2020. They also employ a number of variations on the classic fietsstraat that work to make cars act more like guests. These are not in obscure corners of the city, but are major roadways that not long ago would have been filled with cars. Remarkably, this shift has taken place over a few years—evidence that such change can take place rapidly with the political will.
